Home Football Men’s Football Masaza Cup 2024 Masaza Cup: Sewanyana, Kanyike guides Bululi past Bulemeezi in opener

The 2024 Airtel Masaza Cup tournament got underway with Bululi edging defending champions Bulemeezi County 0-1 at Kosovo ground in Kasana, Luwero.

The game played in front of a colourful big crowd that contained thousands of both Bululi, and Bulemeezi fans painted a clear Kansai Plascon Twaake picture.

Key dignitaries from different walks of life graced the occasion over the weekend led by Buganda Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga.

Robert Ssewanyana who trained with Bulemeezi for the most part of pre-season before joining the Bululi County camp was the hero of the day.

He scored the lone goal of the game on a hot Saturday evening thanks to Bulemeezi’s slow start and clumsy defending on top of wasting chances in the final third.

Bululi dominated the game with Muhammad Kanyike another Bulemeezi product leading by example, posting a man of the match performance.

The goal that came inside 20 minutes of the play strengthened the visitors confidence to manage the game’s intensity despite facing numerous attacks.

Bulemeezi came close to equalising with Dickson Kamya missing a tap in off Mike Katumwa‘s delivery while forward Elias Kiyemba missed a free header.

At the end of the game the joyful Bululi Coach Anthony Bongole was happy with the result but cautious about the future. “Now, we have three points but, we still have a long way to go,” he said.

On paper, the 2011 champions are at less odds to reach the quarter finals but with this big result away from home, the dream is on.

Bulemeezi who missed their head Coach Paul Nkata on the touchline had his partner Geoffrey Wasswa in charge.

Now with a dent in their first outing as defending champions, Bulemeezi has to organise their house ahead of their next game.
