- Uganda 73-53 Guinea
Uganda’s U16 basketball team, the Junior Silverbacks, have booked a place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIBA U16 AfroBasket Championship in Kigali.
Rwanda’s loss to Ivory Coast on Tuesday confirmed Uganda’s qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.
This comes after a crucial 73-53 win over Guinea, Uganda’s first victory of the tournament, which reignited their campaign following earlier defeats to Cameroon and Tunisia.
Uganda had a slow start, trailing 18-11 after the first quarter, but recovered in the second, cutting Guinea’s lead to just four points at halftime (29-25).
After the break, the Junior Silverbacks found their rhythm, edging ahead 46-44 by the end of the third quarter.
In the final period, they dominated both ends of the court, holding Guinea to only nine points while pulling away for a comfortable 20-point win.
Pierre Laurent starred with a double-double of 13 points and 19 rebounds. Shammah Kwizera impressed with 14 assists and 10 rebounds, while Shane Kwizera and Lucas Ssenyonjo contributed 14 and 13 points respectively.
With this win, Uganda claimed their first tournament victory but also secured a place among Africa’s top eight.
