Makerere University Business School (MUBS) sent a clear message as pool billiards made its first appearance as a medal sport at the AUUS Games, sweeping past Kyambogo University 5–0 on the opening day at Uganda Christian University.
Playing inside Bishop Elifaazi Maali Hall, MUBS were sharp and composed. Remmy Katende, Jalaludin Batte and Ivan Mwesigwa barely put a foot wrong, each winning all their frames to complete a convincing whitewash and set the early standard.
Captain Batte said the dominant start reflected the team’s ambition.
“This was the perfect way to begin. Everyone played with confidence,” he said. “We are here to win the first gold.”
Pool’s rise to medal status comes six years after it debuted as a demonstration sport at the University of Kisubi in 2019, and MUBS’ opening display hinted at a team eager to make history.
Lira University also impressed, defeating Kisubi 5–1. Woodball World Cup player Michael Musaazi provided Kisubi’s only frame, while Rodney Mutebi and Innocent Olum won two each for Lira, with Jesse Johns Ogwal sealing the victory.
Head coach Herbert Nsimbi praised his side’s discipline despite limited preparation. “The commitment was impressive,” he said.
Soroti University edged KIU 5–3 in a tight contest, while Mountains of the Moon University beat IUIU 5–1. Hosts UCU progressed without playing after Bishop Stuart conceded a walkover.
A match between Victoria University and Makerere University was still pending, but with MUBS already out in front, the race for pool’s first AUUS gold is firmly underway.
