With the men’s semifinals done, the National Basketball League now turns to the women, where four contenders begin their push for the 2025 title this week.
Defending champions JKL Lady Dolphins, chasing a fifth crown, meet eight-time winners UCU Lady Canons in a best of five classic.
JKL boast league top scorer and two-time MVP Hope Akello, dynamic guard Evelyn Nakiyingi, and a deep supporting cast of Brenda Ekon, Rita Imanishimwe, Zainah Lokwameri and Agatha Kamwadda.
UCU arrive with a fast-maturing core. Shilah Lamunu commands the floor, Sylvia Nakituuka stretches defenses with her shooting, while Zoe Atek and Matrina Anyango bring size and versatility.
The other semifinal pits the disciplined JT Lady Jaguars against the surging Magic Stormers, fresh from upsetting KCCA Leopards.
Coach John Omondi’s Stormers thrive on relentless full-court pressure led by hot-handed guard Angela Auma, backcourt mate Daphine Adong and a rugged front line of Kur Ajah, Joy Nekesa and She Cranes star Christine Nakito. Veteran Jesca Namugala adds composure.
JT coach Sudi Ulanga counters with scorers Sarah Ageno, Bai Sangari, and sharpshooter Aziida Nabayunga, aiming to break the Stormers’ press.
MVP spotlight
All eyes remain on Akello, the league’s statistical leader in scoring, rebounds, field-goal percentage and among the top ten in assists and steals.
With a new UGX 4 million MVP prize on the line, many believe her dominance should be rewarded regardless of JKL’s final finish.
Men’s race wide open
The men’s MVP contest is less clear. Finalists City Oilers and Namuwongo Blazers have relied on balanced team play.
Oilers’ postseason spark has come from newcomers Kurt Curry, Chad Bowie, and Moses Maker, while the Blazers spread production across Joel Lukoji, Tonny Drileba and Arthur Wanyoto.
With no standout performer, the vote may hinge on the finals themselves.
