FIFA World Cup Qualifiers
- Botswana 0-1 Uganda
Uganda Cranes kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Botswana on Thursday night, thanks to a second-half header from Jude Ssemugabi at the Obedi Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown.
Ssemugabi bent to meet Allan Okello’s corner nine minutes after the break, sealing a vital victory that lifted Uganda to 18 points, second in Group G.
The result keeps the Cranes in the race for a playoff spot reserved for the best runners-up across Africa’s nine qualifying groups.
It was also a memorable night for veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango, making his first appearance since his 2021 retirement. His composure and leadership helped Uganda keep a clean sheet in a game they largely controlled.
Despite dominating possession, Uganda created few clear chances. Rogers Mato went closest in the first half, forcing a fine save from the Botswana keeper.
With Algeria’s 3–0 win over Somalia confirming their direct qualification on 22 points, Uganda now turns focus to holding second place and staying in the playoff hunt.
