Sommet Basketball Club head coach Albert Aciko has urged his players to tighten up defensively and build stronger chemistry as they prepare to face UMU Flames on Wednesday night at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
Despite opening the season with a 65-56 win over JKL Dolphins at the Kira Den, Aciko admits his side is still finding its rhythm.
“We are looking to improve our chemistry and get the team to gel better, especially on defense,” Aciko said ahead of the 9pm tip-off. “We didn’t defend well against JKL, so against UMU we must execute much better.”
The victory over JKL offered a steady start for a team adjusting after an impressive debut season in the National Basketball League.
In 2025, Sommet reached the playoff semifinals before falling to 10 time champions City Oilers.
This season, however, presents new tests. The departure of key big man Fataki Nyembo to Namuwongo Blazers has left a gap in the paint, one Aciko believes can only be filled through teamwork rather than individual effort.
“We’ve made a few adjustments. By the time we step on court against UMU, we hope to have tightened up our execution,” he said.
Sommet have also been boosted by the return of Kaseya, whose experience is expected to bring balance on both ends of the floor.
“He adds depth and experience. We’ll rely on him a lot offensively, especially in handling the ball and helping our transition,” Aciko noted.
The coach also praised captain Cheng for his leadership.
“Cheng brings quality and leadership. He understands the team and knows how to bring the players together. That’s important for us,” Aciko said.
“Off the court, he’s an ambassador. We’re proud to have him as captain.”
UMU Flames head into the contest seeking a response after losing their opener to UCU Canons, setting up an intense Game Week Two clash.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Miracle Eaglets face UPDF Lady Tomahawks at 7pm at YMCA Wandegeya before City Oilers meet UPDF Tomahawks at 9pm.
At Lugogo, KIU Rangers take on Angels at 7pm ahead of the Sommet-UMU game.
At the Jaguars Den, JT Lady Jaguars host Victoria She Crocs at 7pm, while JT Jaguars play Victoria Crocs at 9pm.
