Fred Muhumuza has joined the Uganda Cranes as assistant coach, taking over from Sam Ssimbwa whose contract was not renewed.
FUFA confirmed the change on Sunday as the national team flew out for an 11-day training camp in Morocco, part of preparations for next month’s continental tournament.
The delegation, led by Dr Apollo Ahimbisibwe, travelled with head coach Paul Put, Muhumuza and the rest of the technical team for a camp that includes two friendly games.
The Cranes are expected to fine tune tactics and make final squad decisions in North Africa.
Muhumuza arrives fresh from guiding Vipers to last season’s league and cup double alongside John “Ayala” Luyinda, during Jacky Minnaert’s tenure.
His appointment effectively ends his spell at Kitende, unless new arrangements are reached.
He is also familiar with the national set-up, having worked under Morley Byekwaso at CHAN and served previously with URA and Tooro Province.
Seventeen players departed from Kampala, while thirteen others will join from their clubs abroad.
Those already in camp include goalkeepers Salim Omar Magoola and Charles Lukwago, plus Vipers’ trio Rogers Torach, Hilary Mukundane and Allan Okello.
Foreign-based midfielders Bobosi Byaruhanga and Travis Mutyaba are also on board, along with Rwanda-based Ronald Ssekiganda and Denis Omedi.
