Home Rugby Rugby Cranes Africa 7s: 6-man Uganda shut out South Africa to ascend to the finals

Uganda men’s 7s team were abe to shut out South Africa, despite a late yellow card and held onto a 12-00 lead and advance to the finals.

In what should be judged as Uganda’s most complete performance of the past year, the Cranes started on the front foot, winning back the kickoff and going on the hunt. Alex Aturinda would flter before following through with his kick, giving South Africa room to gather and ground.

With the resultant kick, South Africa pinned Uganda on the defense before a Philip Wokorach interception put Uganda on the attack, releasing an oncoming Adrian Kasito. Angling for an easier kick, Adrian abandoned the corner, and was eventually stopped in his tracks.

South Africa fluffed the resultant scrum feed, with Aaron Ofoywroth pouncing on a lose ball to score under the posts. Wokorach easily converted. First half ended 7-0 in Uganda’s favor.

The second half saw Uganda defend with precision, and patience and they would later get a penalty that saw them swing the ball across the field with the final ball landing in Aturinda’s hands, who had to beat off one last defender before scoring in the corner.

Isaac Mssa, soon after coming on would see yellow for cynical play but the resilient Uganda shut down any attacks from South Africa to win 12-00.

Uganda will play in Madagscar the Africa 7s final, who defeated Burkina Faso 24-19 after being 19-05 down at some point in the second semifinal.
