Sana Omprakash Kayyar scooped silver at the African Youth Chess Championships that ended on Friday at the Baron Hotel in Cairo, Egypt.
The 15-year-old, competing in the U16 girls category, came second with 7 points behind only Botswana’s Natalie Katlo Banda who garnered 8.5 points.
Out of the nine rounds played, Omprakash won seven. Her first win came against Zimbabwe’s Gwatidzo Ropafadzo in the opening round.
Despite losing to the local, Tamer Jana in the second round and the eventual winner in the sixth round, Omprakash capped her outstanding display with victory against Namibia’s Woman Candidate Master Jamie Nichole Beukes in the last round to finish second and bag silver.
Ugand secured just one medal, but there were other outstanding displays from the team that consisted of 23 players.
Edwin Pido in his U16 boys category missed out on a medal by half a point. Pido finished the tournament placed fourth with 6.5 points.
Like Pido, Aine Atubet missed out on the medal by half a point. Atubet competed in the U10 girls category. The same was for Talia Atubet, Aine’s sibling who U08 girls category came fifth with 5.5 points.
Hannah Zion Mawejje, who was part of the team that participated at the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad in Eindhoven, Netherlands in August was the other Ugandan that finished in the top ten.
Mawejje came ninth in her U18 girls category.
