Uganda’s athletics team left a strong mark at the 4th African Youth Games, turning promise into podium finishes at the Complexo Desportivo Paralympico do Bengo, Angola.
The first moment of celebration came in the girls’ U17 3000 metres, where Keren Chelimo dug deep in a tightly contested race to claim bronze.

Chelimo crossed the line in 9:41.81, holding her nerve as Kenya’s Lorna Cherono finished just ahead in 9:40.80.
It was an itchy run that outlined Uganda’s growing strength in distance events at youth level.
Uganda’s brightest highlight followed in the girls’ 1500 metres. Baskaline Cherotwo delivered a composed and confident performance to secure silver in a time of 4:28.26, earning Uganda its first-ever silver medal in the event at the African Youth Games.

Only Ethiopia’s Hana Negesa, who won gold in 4:26.14, stood between Cherotwo and the top step of the podium.
Away from the medals, other Ugandan athletes showed resilience and promise. Risper Chekwemboi battled to a respectable fifth-place finish in the U17 girls’ 800 metres, clocking 2:14.3, while Loput Kizito placed sixth in the boys’ U17 1500 metres with a time of 4:10.59, gaining valuable experience on the continental stage.
Head coach Immaculate Chemutai praised the team’s efforts, highlighting the potential within the squad.
“According to me, the performance was good. I’m proud of the athletes and this shows that our athletes are talented,” Chemutai said.
“Despite the busy school schedule, they performed well. With better preparation next time, they can bring us gold in the races to come.”
