Uganda’s men’s basketball team opened their FIBA AfroBasket 2025 campaign with a tough clash against African giants Senegal at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda.

Despite the boost from betPawa, their fourth appearance at the tournament was a tough outing full of lessons from opponents like; five-time champions Egypt and a strong Mali side.

With the sponsor’s objective to amplify the Silverbacks’ participation in Angola, enhance fan engagement, the team led by new captain Robinson Opong Odoch did put up a solid fight with Head coach George Galanopoulos, assistants Mandy Juruni and Andrew Tendo.

Well, the Silverbacks fell short as they didn’t progress to the knockout stages but did make Ugandans proud as the young squad left it all on the court.

  • Senegal 88-53 Uganda
  • Mali 85-70 Uganda
  • Egypt 77-64 Uganda

For now, the eyes and focus are on team effort, future prospects, and appreciation for fan support in the forthcoming campaigns.

With all eyes on the results, this was a time to also integrate some new blood into the team with the main name being Joel Tejan Rugette, an exciting talent alongside other two debutants Jackson Moni and Naseef Lubowa who all managed to get some minutes at the tournament.
