Come Sunday, April 6, history will unfold at Makerere Rugby Grounds, famously known as The Graveyard.
While much of the attention will be on Namilyango College (NGO), a dominant force in the U15, U17, and U20 categories as they battle King’s College Buddo and St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) another historic clash will take place.
For the first time ever, the Schools Rugby Division Two Final will be played, featuring two debutants Airforce Army and Mpungwe Seed.
This milestone marks not only a growing interest in school rugby but also a testament to the relentless pursuit of success by these two emerging teams.
Airforce’s flight to the final
Airforce Army’s name is already recognized in school sports, primarily because of its girls’ rugby team which has established a strong reputation. However, this year has seen the school break new ground by fielding a team in the Schools League for the first time.
Despite their inexperience, Airforce has adapted quickly to the demands of the league, showing resilience and discipline throughout the campaign. Their defining moment came in the semifinal against Global High where they delivered a strong performance to book their place in this historic final.
Mpungwe’s Unexpected Rise
Unlike Airforce, Mpungwe Seed entered this season with little to no expectations. A newly formed team playing in its debut Schools League campaign, Mpungwe faced an uphill battle to compete against more established sides. But against the odds, they have risen through the ranks, showing courage and adaptability.
Their path to the final was secured after a victory over Victoria High School, a win that solidified their status as genuine contenders. Mpungwe may not have the experience of other schools, but their journey has already been remarkable and one more win would complete a dream debut season.
Beyond the result, this final represents the growth of women’s rugby in schools and the emergence of new teams willing to challenge the status quo.
In the Boys Division Two final, Airforce Army edged Green Hill 17-12 to clinch the title.
