Reigning Uganda Open champion Joseph Reagan Akena is set to take a major step in his golfing career as he heads to the United States for the US Amateur Championship qualifiers next month.
The 20-year-old will compete at PB Dye Golf Club in Washington from July 17–19, having earned his place among the world’s top amateur golfers by cracking the top 500 in the global rankings.
“It’s a dream and an honour to play in this tournament,” Akena said after securing his U.S. visa on Monday.
“My journey keeps unfolding in exciting ways, and I look forward to learning from this experience in the golf capital of the world.”
However, the trip comes with a sacrifice. Akena will miss the Pearl of Africa Golf Series in Lugazi, a tournament close to his heart.
“I’d have loved to play in the POA event,” he said. “But you can’t have it all. I’ll miss it, but I’ll be back for the Open.”
Akena has enjoyed a stellar 2024, with wins at the Kakira Open, Jinja Open, Lugazi Centenary, Mbale Open, Kilelesi Competition and the Godfrey Nsubuga Invitational, a run topped by his Uganda Open triumph. He also played a key role in Uganda’s Victoria Cup win over Kenya in March.
He credited the R&A High Performance programme and Uganda Golf Union for their support.
Akena won’t be alone in the U.S. qualifiers. Former Uganda Open champion Godfrey Nsubuga will also compete, playing at a different course from July 14–17.
