Uganda’s Gazelles stormed into the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket with a commanding 88-51 win over Guinea in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Sunday afternoon.

Melisa Akullu led the charge, scoring 26 points in just 22 minutes. She added 7 rebounds from the field in a performance that set the tone early.

Uganda started fast, taking a 29-19 first-quarter lead and locking down on defense to stretch the gap to 45-31 at halftime. A 28-point third quarter sealed the deal as the Gazelles ran away with it.

Team captain Jane Asinde chipped in 15 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds. Perus Nyamwenge, filling in as point guard, added 7 assists, 4 steals, and controlled the game flow with poise.

Claire Lamunu and Hope Akello gave solid support off the bench, and every Ugandan player scored except Agatha Kamwada.

Guinea’s Masseny Kaba battled with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Aicha Maara had 11 points and 6 assists, but turnovers and poor shooting hurt their chances.

The dominant win sets Uganda up for a big test against 11-time champions Senegal on Monday.
