Itanda Kayakers won by 6 wickets

Proscovia Alako fought hard, but on the biggest stage her brilliance wasn’t enough. The Karuma Rapids captain struck 46 off 41 at Lugogo Cricket Oval, yet Itanda Kayakers’ calm execution under pressure carried them to a memorable six-wicket win and the Waterfalls Women’s Elite League (WEL) 2026 crown on Sunday evening.

Karuma came into the final with history on their side. Earlier in the tournament, they had dominated the Kayakers in a rain shortened five-over contest, restricting them to 30 for 4 before cruising to a ten wicket victory. That result all but confirmed Karuma as favourites.

Finals, though rarely follow form. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Karuma hoped to set the tone. Instead, they were met by a disciplined Itanda bowling attack that never allowed momentum to settle. Wickets fell steadily, partnerships struggled, and pressure built with every over.

Alako stood firm amid the collapse, leading from the front with a determined 46 off 41 balls, including five boundaries and a towering six. Patricia Malemikia added a brief spark with 12 from seven balls, but each attempt to accelerate was quickly cut short.

Hanifa Noreen led Itanda’s charge with a superb spell of 3 for 11 in two overs, ripping through the middle order. Immaculate Nandera (2 for 13) and Naume Jane Amongin (2 for 19) provided solid support as Karuma were bowled out for 102 in 20 overs, a total that felt light on a good surface.

In reply, Itanda Kayakers lost an early wicket, offering Karuma a flicker of hope. Janet Mbabazi quickly restored order, anchoring the chase with a composed 36 off 38 balls that kept the target firmly in sight.

The turning point came through Jimia Abdallah Muhammed. Her aggressive 28 off 21 balls, featuring three fours and two sixes, shifted the momentum decisively.

With support from Immaculate Nakisuuyi and a steady unbeaten contribution from Lorna Anyait, Itanda cruised home at 103 for 4 in just 15.3 overs.

As the winning runs were struck, celebrations spilled onto the field. From group-stage disappointment to final day triumph, Itanda Kayakers completed a remarkable journey, lifting the WEL 2026 trophy through belief and teamwork.

Alako was later rewarded with the Best Batter award for her outstanding tournament, but the evening belonged to Itanda, champions built on balance rather than brilliance alone.
