Ugandan football continues to make its mark in South Africa, with goalkeeper Ali Mwirusi Ramathan the latest player to take that route.
Just days after Joel Madondo sealed a move to top flight Richards Bay, Mwirusi has joined second tier side Midlands Wanderers FC.
The former Express FC goalkeeper wasted no time settling in.
On Wednesday evening, he made his debut for the Pietermaritzburg based club and marked it with a clean sheet as Midlands Wanderers held Casric Stars to a goalless draw.
Mwirusi left Uganda after spending only the first half of the season in the Uganda Premier League.
He now finds himself in the National First Division officially the Motsepe Foundation Championship, a competitive 16-team league that sits just below South Africa’s Premiership.
Midlands Wanderers are currently 14th, with 13 points from 15 matches.
The move is another step in a career built on steady progression. Mwirusi first caught attention at the National Schools Championships while representing Kibuli SS, Amus College and St Mary’s Kitende.
He later joined KCCA FC before venturing abroad, featuring in lower leagues in Spain and England with Villajoyosa CF and Squire Gates FC. He has also had trials with Wigan Athletic in England and FC Vaulx en Velin in France.
By heading to South Africa, Mwirusi joins a growing list of Ugandan goalkeepers in the country, including Denis Onyango, Jamal Salim Magoola and Isma Watenga.
