On Friday, Amus College’s Allan Oyirwoth emerged victorious as the Male Athlete of the Year at the historic first edition of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Excellence Awards, held at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
Oyirwoth’s impressive season saw him dominate both regional and national competitions. He earned the top scorer and MVP titles in the Teso Region Qualifiers and the National Championship in Fort Portal, respectively.
His prowess extended beyond Ugandan borders, securing the golden boot in both the FEASSA Games in Rwanda (12 goals) and the ISF games in Morocco (10 goals).

Furthermore, Oyirwoth played a crucial role on his Cranes’ debut in assisting Rogers Mato’s goal in Uganda’s 1-0 victory over Somalia in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers last month.
National Council of Sports (NCS) Chairman Ambrose Tashobya, Secretary General Dr. Bernard Ogwel, and other prominent figures graced the event, adding to its prestige.

Reverend Canon Duncan Mugumya, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Sports in the Ministry of Education and Sport, emphasized the government’s commitment to elevating school sports.
“The fact that there is an increased budget we want to make sure sports in schools is at higher level. We also want to create a big competition with other countries since we have the talent,” Mugumya stated.
Other Winners
In the female category, St Noa’s Peace Nyimungere shone brightly, claiming the coveted Female Athlete of the Year title.

Beyond individual accolades, the awards recognized exceptional contributions across various roles in school sports.
Ayub Khalifah Kiyingi of Kawempe Muslim emerged as the Best Male Coach, while Lillian Mugisha of St. Noa Girls Boarding School was awarded the Best Female Coach title.
The dedication of sports teachers was also celebrated, with Grace Kyolaba of St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School, Kitende, and Erias Kasujja of Kibuli Secondary School receiving the Best Sports Teacher awards for female and male categories, respectively.

St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School, Kitende, was recognized as the Best School, a testament to their comprehensive athletic achievements.
Their recent qualification for the CAF Pan African Schools Boys Championship solidified their dominance, having previously secured national championships in boys’ football, netball, 3×3 and 5×5 girls’ basketball, and the Boys’ football crown in the FEASSA Games.
