Amus College WFC wrote a new chapter in Ugandan football history on Saturday, edging Kawempe Muslim LFC 1-0 to claim their first-ever FUFA Women’s Cup title at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.
In a tightly contested final that offered few chances, the breakthrough came just two minutes from time.
Under pressure from Amus striker Shalyne Opisa, Kawempe’s Samali Nakacwa turned the ball into her own net, sparking wild celebrations from the Amus bench and their Bukedea faithful.
Both teams approached the match with caution. Kawempe, still chasing their first Cup title despite years of league dominance, faced a disciplined Amus side that matched them stride for stride. The midfield was congested, leaving little room for creativity.
Amus nearly went ahead in the 67th minute when Tamis Shafiga’s header narrowly missed the target. Kawempe responded seven minutes later, but Jovia Nakagolo’s fierce shot was brilliantly saved by Amus goalkeeper Ritah Namukisa.
Just when penalties seemed inevitable, Opisa’s relentless pressing forced Nakacwa into a costly error that sealed Amus’s historic win.
Adding emotion to the day, last year’s winning captain Aminah Nakato of She Corporate FC presented the trophy at halftime and later handed it to the new champions, a gesture highlighting tradition and continuity in women’s football.
Amus began their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Isra Soccer Academy, received a walkover against Asubo Ladies, and edged Wakiso Hill 3-2 in a thrilling quarterfinal.
Their biggest statement came in the semifinals, where they stunned defending champions Uganda Martyrs Lubaga 4-2 on aggregate with Opisa again leading the charge.
Kawempe, meanwhile, eliminated Royal Dreamers, Makerere University, and She Corporate, before overcoming St. Noa Girls SS in the semifinals. Despite their pedigree, the Cup remains out of reach.
