Uganda Rugby Sevens fans awoke to a familiar sense of anticipation but with one notable change.
In a bold yet strategic move, Alex Aturinda has replaced Patrick Okello in the final squad set to defend Uganda’s title at the 2025 Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Championship in Mauritius.
The squad announcement, made at the Uganda Rugby Union headquarters, marks the final step in preparations for what promises to be a fierce battle on the Indian Ocean island.
The team jets out on Wednesday, with their sights firmly set on lifting the continental crown once again.
Head coach Tolbert Onyango, known for his methodical planning and player trust, opted to maintain consistency by sticking with the same core squad that triumphed at the Kampala International Sevens earlier this month.
That tournament, hosted on home turf, provided a crucial litmus test and Uganda passed with flying colors.
Aturinda Steps Up
The return of skipper Alex Aturinda to the fold comes with leadership significance. A battle-hardened figure in Uganda’s sevens circuit, Aturinda missed the Kampala Sevens but has since returned to full fitness and form.
His replacement of Patrick Okello brings experience, calm under pressure, and a familiar voice to rally the troops when it matters most.
Aturinda will be supported by vice-captain Nobert Okeny, forming a leadership duo that blends energy, discipline and resilience.
Uganda drawn in fierce Pool A
Uganda faces a testing Pool A alongside long-time rivals Kenya, as well as Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
The regional rivalry with Kenya, who always bring flair and firepower, could determine who tops the group.
Ghana and Ivory Coast, though underdogs, have proven capable of springing surprises.

- 12:34 pm – Uganda Vs Côte d’Ivoire
- 3:18 pm – Uganda Vs Kenya
The tournament will unfold at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mapou, streamed live on Rugby Africa’s YouTube and Facebook pages and via Rugby Pass.
