Augustus Owinyi wins treble at City Tyres Badminton Challenge

Uganda’s top seed, Owinyi, delivered a stellar performance at the 7th Edition of the City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge. Held at Lugogo Indoor Arena from October 17th to 20th, 2024, Owinyi claimed gold in Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, and the Nations Challenge.

In the Men’s Singles final, Owinyi defeated Micheal Reagan Nsubuga in straight sets (21-13, 21-17). He also secured victory in Men’s Doubles, partnering with Muzafaru Lubega to defeat the Micheal Nsubuga Reagan + Tayebwa Shelton duo.

The Nations Challenge saw Owinyi and Lubega triumph over an Indian pair in straight sets. This victory marked the beginning of Owinyi’s impressive three-final marathon.

The tournament featured various categories, including Schools, Universities, Corporate companies, Expatriates, and Professionals, with singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events for both men and women.

While Owinyi dominated the men’s categories, Tracy Naluwooza faced a controversial loss in the Women’s Singles final against Fadilah Shamika Rafi. The match went to three sets, with tempers flaring and the outcome disputed.

Other notable results included William Kabindi’s victory in the Veterans Singles Men Above 50 category and Annet Nakamya’s win in the Veteran Women’s Singles Above 50.

The tournament offered cash prizes to the winners and runners-up in various categories. Men’s and Women’s Singles champions received 800,000 UGX, while runners-up earned 500,000 UGX. Doubles categories had slightly lower prize money.
