The Uganda Chess Federation opened a new chapter on November 30, 2025, as delegates met for an Annual General Meeting that ended Eng. Emmanuel Mwaka’s eight year reign and ushered in a fresh executive team.

The elections, smoothly handled by returning officers Rugyendo Brian and Musaasizi Emmanuel, saw 28 delegates vote to shape the federation’s next four years.

The biggest spotlight was on the presidency, where Andrew Bakiza emerged victorious with 14 votes, defeating Robert Katende and Otim Isaac Jonathan in one of the day’s most closely watched contests.

The new leadership also includes Vice President Mande Allan Benjamin (16 votes), General Secretary Okas Walter (unopposed), Treasurer Muwanguzi David (16 votes), and Women’s Affairs Representative Nakiirya Victoria (15 votes).

Delegates also took a moment to reflect on the work of the outgoing administration. Under Mwaka, Uganda Chess climbed from Tier 3 to Tier 2, unlocking more funding and laying a stronger foundation for future growth. It is on this progress that the new team now hopes to build.

In his acceptance speech, Bakiza thanked delegates for their trust and promised to promote transparency, boost grassroots development, and widen participation nationwide.

He stressed continuity, protecting the gains made under Mwaka while aiming to restore Uganda’s competitiveness on the continent and beyond.

The AGM ended on a hopeful note, with delegates and chess enthusiasts celebrating a smooth transition and renewed confidence in the sport’s future.
