Basketball player Walujo suspended for 5 years over match fixing allegations

Uganda national team, the Silverbacks and City Oilers player Edrine Walujo has been suspended for five years by the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association.

This followed an heating conducted by FUBA Competition Council and a Disciplinary with evidence presented, a testimony from the Athlete and the National Team Delegation of Benin.

The sitting gave birth to three recommendations with the first one, suspending Walujo for FIVE (5) YEARS in accordance with Section 7.04(f) of the FUBA Competition Rules and Regulations 2024.

The second was, Walujo shall not participate in any of the FUBA sanctioned events either as an Athlete, a Fan or an Administrator with any of the clubs affiliated to FUBA.

The last recommendation noted that the suspension is effective as of the 19th day of August 2024 as signed by FUBA Vice President Administration, Hudson Ssegamwenge this morning.

Also to note, the document reads that the Federation shall not issue any further statements in regard to this matter until the Police Case is concluded.

The genius of the Walujo-match fixing saga

The brief facts of this matter are that on the 6th of August 2024 during the FIBA 3X3 Nations League, Walujo was arrested on allegations of betting or gambling and game fixing.

It is said that Walujo contacted a player from team Benin offering him dollars to manipulate the outcome of the fixture but the athlete simply notified his coach.

Phone calls and WhatsApp chats were made between Walujo and the Benin player and the two agreed to meet at the Lugogo Indoor Arena outside bar.

Walujo was surprised to see the player, his coach and policemen approaching him hence his arrest and detention at Jinja Road Police.

Charges have since been preferred against him Vide Police File No. Jinja Road Police CRB/734/2024 and investigations are still on going.
