When the rain began to pour and tension hit its peak at the Uganda Handball Super League’s Matchday three clash, only one man seemed unfazed: Daniel Bongomin.

The Police handball sensation delivered a performance for the ages, scoring an astonishing 19 goals to propel his side to a hard-fought 46-42 victory over bitter rivals Makerere University.

The match between Police and Makerere University was always going to be the headline act. The two share a fierce rivalry that stretches beyond the court and this encounter proved why. From the first whistle, it was end-to-end action, filled with slick passes, aggressive defending and explosive scoring.

As the match wore on, the intensity only deepened with neither side willing to blink. But when the heavens opened towards the game’s conclusion, sending a torrent of rain cascading down, most players struggled to adapt. Most, except Bongomin.

With every step he took, every throw he released, Bongomin Daniel looked like a man on a mission. The slippery court, the soaked jerseys, the deafening noise it didn’t matter. He danced through Makerere’s defense time and again, registering 19 goals, the highest of the game by a clear margin.

Backed by a strong supporting cast, including Twinomugisha Kenneth with 9 goals, Waiswa Abdul Malik and Ssebuguzi Wasswa with 6 each and a goal apiece from Ssendagire Hassan and Saidi Abdul Salaam, Police managed to pull ahead in the dying minutes, securing a crucial four-point win.

The victory sends a clear message to the rest of the league: Police are not ready to give up their crown. After three matchdays, the reigning champions continue to show grit, depth and the ability to rise to big occasions. And with a player like Bongomin in their ranks, their title defense is off to a formidable start.

Elsewhere in the men’s league, Evergreen delivered a statement of their own with a dominant 45-16 victory over Prisons while Uzalendo endured a tough afternoon, falling 33-50 to a relentless Prisons side in a separate fixture.

In the women’s league, Victoria University edged Nkajja in a thrilling 46-40 win. Kyangeza Bees and Prisons Women played out an evenly matched 39-39 draw and Kawanda showcased their strength with a comfortable 33-27 victory over Makerere University.
