- Bugema (1) 0-0 (1) Muteesa I Royal
Bugema University secured a dramatic spot in the Pepsi University Football League semifinals after playing out a tense 0-0 draw with Muteesa I Royal University in their quarterfinal second leg on Monday.
The result saw Bugema advance on the away goals rule, having scored in the first leg 1-1 draw in Masaka.
From the opening whistle, Bugema dominated possession, pressing for an early breakthrough. Their attacking intent was evident when Dennis Kimuli found Musuk Innocent in space on the left wing, but his cross was calmly collected by Muteesa’s goalkeeper Mugerwa Fred who put in a busy shift to keep the hosts at bay.

Muteesa had their moments too, with Eddie Jjunju flicking a dangerous ball towards Patrick Busuulwa in the 20th minute, only for the striker to miscue his effort.
Five minutes before halftime, Male Joseph missed a golden opportunity for Bugema, reflecting the hosts’ struggles in front of goal.
Just before the break, Kalungi Ronald denied Busuulwa Akaya with a fine save, ensuring the game remained goalless at halftime.
The second half saw more missed chances. Seven minutes after the restart, Busuulwa Patrick won the ball high up the pitch but sent his shot wide. In the 66th minute, a teasing cross from Elakas narrowly missed an onrushing Arthur Jjombwe, allowing Muteesa to clear the danger.
However, the game was cut short due to security concerns, forcing an early stoppage. Despite the abrupt end, Bugema held on to advance, with the away goals rule proving decisive after the 1-1 first-leg draw in Masaka.
Bugema’s victory marks a significant milestone, as they finally break their quarterfinal jinx having been eliminated at this stage in the past four seasons.
University Football League action continues on Tuesday, March 25 with Uganda Martyrs hosting Nkumba University in Nkozi, along Masaka Road.
