URA FC striker Bruno Bunyaga has made a surprise move to James Madison University in Harrisonburg, USA, to combine football with academics.
The 21-year-old had just signed a contract extension with URA until 2027 on July 29 but left without the club’s involvement in the transfer. His departure comes shortly after he was expected to step into a bigger role following Ivan Ahimbisibwe’s move to KCCA FC.
Bunyaga scored six goals and made one assist in 27 games last season as URA finished fourth in the Uganda Premier League. Internationally, he helped the Uganda Hippos win silver at the 2024 All-Africa Games in Ghana.
James Madison University, ranked among the top 10 in the US for both academics and football, offers him a new platform to grow. He joins other Ugandans in the US college system, including Dominic Ayella, Shugai Kalisa, Joseph Ogwang, Elvis Mwanje, and Brian Toto Majub.
Before URA, Bunyaga played for Bushenyi Veterans, Kiyinda Boys, Impala Hill, Fields of Dreams, and Devine Sports Community. His move adds to the growing trend of Ugandan players chasing opportunities abroad.
