Bunyaruguru United Football Club is headed to the FUFA Big League after a dramatic 4-1 penalty shootout win over Rwenzori Lions in the second leg of the Regional League promotional playoff on Saturday.
Having lost the first leg 1-0, the Rubirizi-based side needed a strong response and got it. Forward Muhammad Kasule scored in the second half to level the aggregate at 1-1, sending the tie to penalties.
Captain Hassan Sanya led by example in the shootout, converting his spot kick alongside teammates Mark Ssali, Kasule, and Vincent Kibuuka. But it was goalkeeper Nazir Kibule Obbo who stole the spotlight, saving two penalties to seal the win.
Bunyaruguru now joins CATDA FC (Kampala Region) and Iganga United (Eastern Region) in the FUFA Big League for the 2025–2026 season.
The final promotion spot will be decided between Nebbi Central and Young Elephants, with Nebbi holding a 1-0 lead going into their second leg.
They replace one of the four relegated sides from last season: Booma FC, MYDA FC, Busoga United or Arua Hill.
