Busoga College Mwiri started the defence of the Sky View Boys Schools Cricket Week title in a shaky manner following their unconvincing win over Masaka SS on Sunday.
Edwin Nuwagaba, the captain of the side had led by example to restrict their opponents to just 73/7!
The team skipper picked three wickets, but a series of sloppy batting displays, especially from the senior players meant Mwiri survived by a whisker.
While Mwiri completed the chase in the 10.1 Over, they finished it with only two wickets at hand.
Masaka enjoyed some decent bowling. Fahad Mutagana who is the captain of the national U19 boys team was ducked so was Nuwagaba.
Emmanuel Isaneez, Mwiri’s head coach will have Conrad Lubwama to thank for salvaging the victory. Lubwama came on to bat at No. 8 and scored 32 not out.
While Mwiri struggled in their opener, their major rivals were too good for their respective opponents.
Kololo SS, Jinja SS and Nyakasura were comfortable victors on Day one, and that was thanks to some individual brilliance.
Christopher Kidega knocked 131 off 74 balls to lead Kololo to a 180-run win against tournament debutants St. Joseph’s College, Layibi.
In that same game, Shafic Namidala picked three wickets for Kololo. He conceded just four runs.
Nyakasura captain Joseph Baguma hit 71 as the Western school beat St. John’s SS by 86 runs in their second game of the tournament.
Jinja SS annihilated Delhi Public School International by 166 runs thanks to Richard Sohera‘s knock of 103. Sohera also picked three wickets while conceding just three runs.
Pius Oloka added to Sohera’s century with his half century of 73 off 32 while Samuel Kalyowa ensured Delhi don’t get near the target by plucking four wickets.
In the St. John High School game against Good Heart, Victor Aroma scored 81.
