CAF African Schools Football Championship: Kawempe wins inaugural Championship

Uganda representatives in the first edition of CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA qualifiers in the girls’ football category, Kawemepe Muslim, have been crowned champions.

On Wednesday evening, Kawempe needed a 2-1 comeback over Kenya representatives to win the first-ever CAF African Schools Football Championship in the CECAFA qualifiers in a game played at Kasarani Annex Stadium.

Shadia Nabirye and Shaluwa Bitini scored the two important goals that secured a historical and hard-fought win for Kawempe Muslim.

Despite drawing the first game, Kawempe Muslim made a strong statement when they won their remaining four games to top the table and storm the final.

In the final, Kenya took an early lead in two minutes but before the break, Shadia Nabirye equalized to bring hopes back.

In the last stanza, goalscorer Shadia Nabirye picked up a loose ball and assisted Shaluwa Bitini to put Kawempe in the lead and her goal turned into a winner as they completed a 2-1 comeback to win the championship.

Kawempe Muslim SS have pocketed US$10000 nearly thirty-seven million shillings as the prize money.

The Moses Nkata-coached side has now qualified for the CAF Pan African Schools Championship due 2024 and they will represent CECAFA region.
