NEC head coach Hussein Mbalangu has urged his players to turn last week’s frustration into fuel when they face Nairobi United in Saturday’s decisive CAF Confederation Cup second leg.
NEC were seconds from carrying a slim lead to Kenya before conceding at the death in a 2–2 draw at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. The late equalizer stung, but Mbalangu insists the tie is still alive.
“We were disappointed, but we didn’t lose,” he said before departure.
“If we’re clinical in both boxes, we can do to them what they did to us in Kampala.”
Injury Concerns
Forward Cromwell Rwothomio, scorer of NEC’s late equalizer, misses out through injury.
Midfielders Emmanuel Kulanga and James Jarieko are doubtful but travel with the squad.
Selection Calls
Mbalangu must decide whether to stick with the youngsters who started the first leg or turn to experience.
Veterans Mustafa Kizza, Muzamir Mutyaba and Paul Mucureezi impressed off the bench and could start as NEC chase a first-ever appearance in the tournament’s main draw.
Moment of truth
With the aggregate score level and away goals counting, NEC must win in Nairobi to advance. Nairobi United are unbeaten at home this year, but Mbalangu remains confident.
“We respect them, but we believe in ourselves,” he said. “The boys have shown they can handle pressure. This is the moment to prove it.”
