CAF Champions League 1st Preliminary Round
- African Stars 0-1 Vipers SC
Vipers SC made a strong start to their CAF Champions League campaign with a 1–0 win over African Stars in Friday’s first preliminary round at Athlone Stadium.
Defender Hillary Mukundane scored the lone goal in the 13th minute, heading home to give the Ugandan champions a valuable away advantage.
The Namibian side had to host the match in South Africa due to the lack of a CAF-certified stadium at home.
Milton Karisa and substitute Yunus Sentamu came close to adding a second, but African Stars’ goalkeeper kept the hosts in the tie. Vipers held firm under late pressure to preserve their slim lead.
The return leg is set for next Saturday at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, where Vipers will look to finish the job.
The aggregate winner will face either Zambia’s Power Dynamos or Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas in the next round, one step from the group stage.
