Gizamba’s journey into the world of rugby began in his formative years at Namilyango College, where he started as a touch player in Form Three.

Despite this early start, his talent and determination quickly shone through, propelling him to a remarkable string of achievements in the sport.

During his O’Level years, Gizamba’s rugby prowess earned him several accolades, including a U15 silver medal and an undefeated U17 team that took home the gold.

He also helped his team win the Uganda Central Schools 7s Championship twice and claimed gold at the School National 15s Championship.

His efforts were further recognized when he earned a bronze medal at the East African School Games in Arusha, Tanzania, and another gold at the Kabaka Coronations 7s at Namilyango College.

As he advanced to A-Level, Gizamba continued to dominate, earning a reputation as one of the top players in the region.

He was named Mr. Valentines at the Valentines 7s circuit and was a standout performer in multiple tournaments, including gold medals in the U19 and Uganda Central National 7s, as well as at the Uganda National Schools 15s held in Gulu.

His success on the field culminated in being named the Most Decorated School Rugby Player in 2022, alongside titles such as Most Valuable Player and Top Points Scorer at the Uganda National School Games in Gulu.

Gizamba’s talent was further honed at the university level when he captained the Uganda National U20 Team and debuted for KCB Kobs during his Form Six vacation.

He played key roles in several prestigious university 7s tournaments, helping his team clinch gold at Kyambogo, Kisubi, UCU, Makerere, and Kyadondo, among others.

His accomplishments earned him a place in the training squad to represent Uganda in the World University Games, as well as an invite to a high-performance training camp with the Uganda National Team in South Africa.

With a future brimming with promise, Gizamba’s ambitions remain high. He is eager to join both the national 7s and 15s teams, with long-term aspirations to captain the Kobs Rugby Club and even the national team.

Leadership at Victoria University

Beyond his athletic achievements, Gizamba’s leadership journey has been equally impressive.

A proud product of the eastern part of Uganda and a dedicated member of the Bamasaba tribe, Calvin’s leadership story began in his early school years.

Although he initially dreamed of becoming a lawyer and judge, his involvement in leadership activities at Namilyango College helped shape his vision for the future.

Gizamba’s leadership skills were evident early on. He began by standing for class captain in Form One, losing by a narrow margin.

However, he persevered, and in the following years, he earned significant leadership roles, including serving as the Junior Games and Sports Minister and Deputy General Secretary of the Students’ Council.

His leadership journey continued to flourish through his involvement in various clubs and societies, where he served as class councillor, speaker of the students’ council, and acting president of the Interact Club.

After joining Victoria University, Gizamba continued to make his mark. He served as a class coordinator and representative for five modules, eventually being appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Ethics in the 7th Guild Government.

Today, he is vying for the prestigious position of Guild Speaker, the second-highest post in the student guild hierarchy at Victoria University.

With his combination of academic achievements, leadership experience, and commitment to community service, Calvin stands as a formidable candidate to represent the student body in this important role.

Looking Ahead

Gizamba’s aspirations extend beyond the classroom and rugby field. He is driven by a burning zeal to improve himself continually, both as an athlete and a leader.

He envisions a future where he not only represents Uganda at the highest levels of rugby but also becomes a figurehead for leadership, community engagement, and positive change.

As he campaigns for the Guild Speaker position, Calvin Gizamba exemplifies the power of hard work, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

His journey is a testament to the importance of combining academic, athletic, and leadership pursuits to create a well-rounded individual who is ready to make a difference.

The Victoria University community can look forward to the future with Gizamba leading the charge towards greater achievements.

In his own words: “I am not just looking to achieve greatness for myself but to inspire others to do the same.”

With such vision and determination, Calvin Gizamba is poised to leave an indelible mark on both Victoria University and the world of rugby.
