The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has announced Ethiopia as the host nation for two prestigious women’s football tournaments in 2024: the CAF Women’s Champions League zonal qualifiers and the U-20 Girls Championship.
This marks a significant moment for Ethiopian football, as the country will host the fourth edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA qualifiers for the first time.
The tournament serves as a crucial stepping stone for regional teams aiming to qualify for the continental CAF Women’s Champions League.
Last year’s edition was won by JKT Queens of Tanzania in a tournament that was hosted in Uganda. Vihiga Queens of Kenya won the inaugural tournament in 2021.
Ethiopia will also defend their crown in the CECAFA U20 Girls Championship as hosts, having clinched the title in 2021 after defeating Uganda.
Zanzibar Secures CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup and CAF Schools Qualifiers
Meanwhile, Zanzibar emerged victorious in the bid to host the prestigious CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, marking its return after a five-year hiatus.
The 2024 edition promises exciting competition as teams vie for regional bragging rights. The island nation will also host the CAF Africa Schools Football Championship Zonal qualifiers, fostering youth development in the sport.
Uganda and Tanzania Take Up AFCON Qualifiers
Uganda and Tanzania will play key roles in continental youth football development by hosting the AFCON U-17 and U-20 Boys Zonal qualifiers, respectively.
These tournaments provide a pathway for talented young players to compete for a place in the Africa Cup of Nations.
CECAFA Embraces Change and Growth
CECAFA Vice President Isayas Jira emphasized the organization’s commitment to innovation and growth, highlighting the return of the Senior Challenge Cup and the appointment of a six-member committee to evaluate and improve tournaments.
Zanzibar Football Federation President Suleiman Mahmoud Jabir expressed his enthusiasm for the Senior Challenge Cup’s return, believing it will strengthen regional teams and boost AFCON qualification chances.
The announcements were made during the CECAFA General Assembly that is ongoing at the Pride Inn Paradise Hotel in Mombasa, Kenya.
