The CECAFA Pre-CHAN Tournament finally kicks off today at Karatu Stadium in Arusha, with hosts Tanzania taking on Uganda in the opening match.

Originally set to begin on Monday with four teams; Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and Congo Brazzaville the tournament faced early disruptions. Congo pulled out citing logistical issues and were replaced by CHAN title holders Senegal.

But on the very day they were meant to play, Kenya also withdrew, just hours before facing Uganda. The sudden decision left organizers scrambling, and the opening game was postponed by a day.

“It’s disappointing,” said CECAFA Executive Director Auka Gecheo. “Kenya had already arrived, and we worked hard to meet their requests. But we move forward.”

The revised format now includes three teams—Tanzania, Uganda, and Senegal competing in a round-robin format.

After today’s match, Uganda plays Senegal on July 25, and the tournament wraps up on July 27 when Senegal faces Tanzania.

Despite the setbacks, CECAFA remains focused on offering valuable preparation for teams heading to the CHAN tournament.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Harambee Stars have returned home to continue their own CHAN build-up without the benefit of this regional test.
