Central 7s returns with fierce competition as Premiership sides eye core status

The Central 7s tournament returns this weekend with fresh intensity, as top Ugandan rugby clubs compete for a chance to qualify for national core status.

What once attracted mostly reserve and regional sides has now grown into a serious competition, drawing former and current Premiership teams like Victoria Sharks, Warriors RFC, and Makerere Impis.

The two-leg tournament kicks off this Saturday, June 21, in Entebbe, with the second leg set for Gayaza the following weekend.

Only the top two teams across both weekends will earn a spot in the national core status qualifiers, making every match critical.

Favorites heading into the tournament are the Victoria Sharks, who recently clinched their second straight University 7s title.

Though still recovering from a demanding 15s season, the Sharks are expected to contend for top honors and anything less than winning both legs would be seen as a disappointment.

But the road won’t be easy. The Entebbe Jaguars and Kisubi Pacers are regulars on the national circuit and bring plenty of firepower, while the Makerere Impis, with their deep rugby roots, add grit and experience.

Underdogs like Kyambogo RFC, Mukono Hawks and Golden Badgers Namugongo are also looking to make their mark.

  • Group B: Kisubi Pacers, Makerere Impis, Blue Phoenix

With budget challenges following the 15s season, the organizers opted for a lean two-circuit format, something coach Byarugaba sees as a necessary step.

“Two circuits are enough for now, but we’re growing,” he said.
