Ugandan badminton players continue chasing for 2028 Olympics qualification following winning 7 bronze medals at the 2025 Kampala International Future Series that concluded on Sunday, September 28.
The performance guarantees high points scored by Ugandan players at the four-day tournament held at Lugogo Indoor Arena, marking 20 years of the Kampala International Future Series with the 18th Edition.
Muzafaru Lubega and Husina Kobugabe won bronze in Mixed Doubles. Gladys Mbabazi and Husina Kobugabe also won bronze for Uganda in Women’s Doubles. In Men’s Doubles, Fred Kirabu and Ivan Mayega won bronze.
The 7th bronze medal for Uganda was won by Harshita Singh. In this year’s edition, Uganda had a team of 46 participants, the biggest part of 86 players from 13 countries across the world availing to collect more points in the journey to USA 2028.
Though Ugandan players continue performing under restrictions in the event, their performance is sloping since 2021, when they last secured gold medals won by Husina Kobugabe, partnered with Gladys Mbabazi in Women’s Doubles, and Israel Wanagalya teamed up with Betty Apio in Mixed Doubles.
This year, the performance continues to drop, having won a silver medal in 2024 courtesy of Fadilah Shamika and Tracy Naluwooza in Women’s doubles as Uganda won a total of 8 medals with 6 bronze under their belt.
Uganda Women’s top seed Fadilah Shamika was eliminated at the quarter-final stage, saying that the back-to-back badminton trip she had has strongly affected her performance.
Following the upset, Fadhilah and fellow Ugandan Badminton players turn their focus to the Uganda International Challenge, which is shuttling off this week at Lugogo Indoor Arena, as they target more 2028 Olympics Games qualification points.
