Uganda’s teenage stars Nancy Chepkwurui and Felister Chepkwemoi lit up the World Mountain Running Championships on Sunday, winning silver and bronze in the U20 women’s race in Canfranc, Spain.
Chepkwurui set a fierce pace over the punishing 6.4km course, finishing second in 39 minutes 24 seconds, just a stride behind the winner.
Chepkwemoi battled the steep climbs and rocky descents to take bronze 42 seconds later, underscoring Uganda’s growing strength in junior women’s mountain running.
Their success followed a Ugandan sweep of the men’s junior 7km race. Titus Musau won in 33:09, chased by Enos Chebet (33:26) and Cherotich Abraham (33:32) for a commanding 1-2-3 finish.
By the close of competition, Uganda had collected nine medals: one individual gold, three silver, two bronze, plus team golds for the junior boys and girls and a silver for the senior men’s classic.
