Joy Cheptoyek gave Uganda a bright start at the World Athletics Championships, finishing seventh in the womenโ€™s 10,000m final with a time of 31:15.03.

She ran bravely alongside a strong field before Kenyaโ€™s Beatrice Chebet broke away to win gold in 30:37.61. Italyโ€™s Nadia Battocletti claimed silver, and Ethiopiaโ€™s Gudaf Tsegay took bronze.

Cheptoyek was Ugandaโ€™s only finisher in the race after Rebecca Chelangat and Sarah Chelangat dropped out before the end. Her top-ten place showed her steady rise on the world stage.
