The City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge, which will be held on October 26-29 at MTN Arena, Lugogo, is expected to give Ugandan players a lot of exposure, according to Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) CEO Simon Mugabi.
“This competition portrays the future of badminton in the country,” Mugabi said at the launch of this year’s Mandela AutoZone on Wednesday.
“Through the support of City Tyres, Uganda is number one on Africa. We have done very well and every country looks at Uganda and how we do things.”

“We want to make sure Badminton grows. This competition is going to give many players a lot of exposure.”

The event has attracted players from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.
The players will compete in categories starting with schools, universities, corporates, professionals, nationals, and overall nations cup categories.
New Badminton Partners
New partners that came on board for the event include the Indian Association of Uganda, Linglong tyres, and Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc).
Zhong Shuang Quan, who represented Linglong president Wang Feng, read a message from Wang in which he hailed Mandela Group for their dedication towards sports development.

“I call upon teenagers to take up this competition and I believe it will be the centre of talent identification.”
“In Uganda we have confidence in Mandela Group since we have been in business with them for 20 years and we believe they will do a good job. We shall continue to partner with them,” Weng said.
Over 900 players are expected to take part in the fifth edition of the event, and there will be big prizes to be won.
City Tyres’ Herbert Bashaasha promised that the company will continue to support badminton in the country.
“Sports is part of us and we believe the tournament will be a success. We shall always to contribute to the progress of badminton and we shall continue to support them,” he said.
