East Africa’s dream at the CHAN 2024 now rests on Uganda after co-hosts Kenya and Tanzania were knocked out in the quarterfinals.
On Friday, Madagascar shocked Kenya 4-3 on penalties at Kasarani after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.
Alphonce Omija put Kenya ahead in the second half, but Fenohasina Razafimaro equalized from the spot in the 71st minute.
Missed penalties from Omija and Michael Kibwage proved costly, sending Madagascar into the semifinals to face Sudan or Algeria.
Later in Dar es Salaam, Morocco ended Tanzania’s fairytale with a 1-0 win at the Benjamin Mpaka National Stadium.
Oussama Lamlioui scored the winner in the 65th minute, setting up a semifinal clash against the winner between Uganda and Senegal.
With Kenya and Tanzania out, Uganda now carries the region’s hopes as they face defending champions Senegal tonight at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Cranes coach Morley Byekwaso remains optimistic:
“This is a special match for us because we are playing at home and want to bring joy to our fans. Senegal is experienced, but with our supporters behind us, we believe we can win.”
Uganda has recent success against Senegal, including a 1-0 group-stage win at CHAN 2022 and a 2-1 victory in a friendly in Arusha. But Senegal coach Souleymane Diallo has warned his side to stay sharp:
“Uganda is well-organized and playing at home, which gives them an edge. But we are ready to fight.”
Both teams will miss key players Uganda’s Hilary Mukundane and Senegal’s Pape Abasse Badji, due to suspension.
A win for Uganda would set up a semifinal against two-time champions Morocco and keep the Pamoja dream alive for East Africa.
