Home Rugby Country for old men as veterans descend upon Kings Park

The 2024 installation of the Kenya-Uganda Legends rugby rivalry gets lifted off this weekend at Kings Park as veterans of the two nations lock horns.

It will be a rekindling of Elgon Cup rugby hostilities between Kenya and Uganda but with minimal levels of fitness and pace as the old bones have started cracking.

The Kenyan outfit comprising of veterans and recently retired players from Nondescripts RFC (Nondoes), the Kenya Simbas, and other local Kenyan rugby clubs are already in the country with several famous names from across the Elgon like brothers Collins Injera and Humphrey Kayange, engine room Wilson K’Opondo, Curtis Lilako and Ugandan champion with Heathens, Vincent “Vinny” Mose.

The Ugandan contingent will be looking to avenge the 38-06 home loss at Kyadondo last year and has included current active veterans like Gabriel Aredo, Michael Wokorach, Scott Oluoch, and Charles Uhuru.

Recently crowned Championship-winning coaches Kevin Makmot and Muhammad Athiyo (Heathens) are part of this ensemble alongside coaches Martial Tchumkam (Rhinos), Davis Kyewalabye, and Victor Wadia (KOBs), and Dennis Etuket (Pirates/Sailors).

The Ugandan ranks will also have game administrators suit up like Daniel Canowira (Pirates), Dr Stone Luggya (KOBs), and Eric Butime (URU).

There is never rugby at Kings Park without a party, and the organizers have a veteran by name, design, respect, and existence in the Legendary superstar Dr. Jose Chameleone who has promised to take revelers through his catalog from Mama Mia, to Kipepeo, Badilisha and Kigwa Leero.

The veterans had a warm-up at Kyadondo Rugby Club last weekend that preceded the rugby championship finale, and they came out on top, beating the Kampani’s Eagles 34-09. Dennis Etuket, Roger Rukundo, and Paul Kabazzi were some of the scorers on the day, with Alfred Karekaho and Gabriel Aredo doing the kicking honors.
