From the Annual General Meeting held at Hotel Africana on Saturday, March 28, Cricket Uganda, in finding ways of achieving the task of country coverage, has embarked on expanding structures to the grassroots.

In the extended setup, the Cricket National Governing Body has adopted the approach to introduce the sport more to District Cricket Associations, which will be licensed to handle cricket-related issues at the district level.

With the 2023 Sports Act mandating federations to have a coverage of 75 percent, Cricket Uganda honorary secretary Denis Musali highlighted the process, “We are very eager to register Cricket Uganda as a Federation, and we started the process and are working towards having our special general assembly by May. Today, we have had the opportunity to acknowledge our members about the changes.”

Despite the move, veteran cricketer Cris Luswata still sees the challenge in taking the game of cricket to the grassroots in the meantime, “Honestly, the sport has moved well from the 1970s, and where we are now, the sport is pleasing. The only problem remains not only beating the deadline to comply with the new Sports Act. Reaching where cricket is now took years; therefore, taking the sport to most of the districts in the country remains a big challenge.”

In the structures that have been adopted to see the fulfillment of the coverage compliance, Cricket Uganda has structured District Cricket Associations to have memberships at the regional levels.

In the regional setups, Cricket Uganda will constitute seven Regional Associations such as Central, Eastern, Nile, Northern, Southern, Western, and Special Interest groups.

Following approval, all District and Regional Cricket Associations and Special Interest groups will join the list of Cricket Uganda National Assembly Membership Joining clubs that have been members for at least ten years, including 8 founding Cricket Clubs, as the rules to be set by the Cricket Uganda Executive Board shall state.
