Uganda U-17 head coach Brian Ssenyondo says his young Cubs are steadily taking shape as the FIFA U-17 World Cup draws closer.
In Dubai for their final preparations, the team opened their friendly series with a 1-1 draw against Venezuela U-17 at Al Arabi Sports and Cultural Club on Thursday evening.
James Bogere put Uganda ahead seven minutes into the second half, finishing off a clever through-ball from Isma Magala.
But the South Americans struck back in the 74th minute to share the spoils.
Despite the draw, Ssenyondo was upbeat about his team’s performance, describing the match as a valuable test.
“Venezuela was a very good challenge, and it gave us a glimpse of what to expect at the World Cup,” he said.
“It was tough, but we controlled the game from the start.”
He added that the focus remains on improving execution rather than chasing results.
“We created at least five good chances in the first half and more after the break. Now it’s about being clinical and defending better. If we can do that, we’ll be ready.”
Ssenyondo praised his players for their discipline, teamwork, and composure, noting improved confidence in building from the back.
The Cubs continue their Dubai camp with two more friendlies against Panama on Sunday, October 26, and Paraguay on Tuesday, October 28 as they fine-tune for their historic World Cup debut.
