Easter WT20 Cup: Akiteng stars as Victoria Pearls dominate day one with double win

Uganda W won by 51 Runs

With Sarah Akiteng on the wheel, Uganda’s Victoria Pearls made a strong start to the Easter Women’s T20 Cup, winning twice on opening day to set the early pace.

They began with a narrow one run victory over USA Women in the morning, then returned in the evening to beat Uganda A Women by 51 runs in a much more comfortable outing.

Uganda A Women chose to bowl first, and the Victoria Pearls had to work hard for their runs. Captain Janet Mbabazi led the way with a steady 42 off 37 balls, holding the innings together as wickets fell around her.

There was little support at the top, with Stephanie Nampiina and Kevin Awino falling early, and the middle order struggling to build partnerships.

Esther Iloku added a valuable unbeaten 20 late on, helping Uganda reach 100 all out in 19.2 overs.

It looked a modest total, but the bowlers quickly turned it into a winning one.

Uganda A Women’s chase fell apart almost immediately, starting with a run-out in the opening over. From there, the innings never recovered.

Sarah Akiteng led the charge with a brilliant five wicket haul, including a hat trick, tearing through the middle order and putting the result beyond doubt making it 9 wickets in her name on day one having contributed 4/16 in the morning match.

Still against Uganda A, Malisa Ariokot and Mutonyi Irene backed her up as wickets kept falling.

Uganda A Women were bowled out for just 49 in 13.3 overs, handing the Victoria Pearls a dominant 51 runs win to cap a perfect day.

Uganda will be back in action on Friday, facing Uganda A Women again in the morning before taking on USA Women in the afternoon, as they look to build on their unbeaten start.
