Ugandan Premier League clubs are set for a financial boost after FIFA expanded its Club Benefits Programme (CBP) to cover World Cup qualifiers.
For the first time, clubs will earn money not only when their players feature at the World Cup finals but also during qualifying matches.
This means local giants like Vipers SC, KCCA FC, and SC Villa will be paid for providing players to the Cranes’ 2026 qualifying campaign.
Vipers will benefit from stars Allan Okello and Rogers Torach, while KCCA will cash in on Gavin Kizito and Joel Sserunjogi.
FIFA has set aside a record USD 355 million for the fourth edition of the CBP, up from USD 209 million after the 2022 World Cup.
The move follows a new agreement with the European Club Association to share World Cup revenue more fairly with clubs worldwide.
“The enhanced programme recognises the huge contribution clubs make to both the qualifiers and the final tournament,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino, calling it “a groundbreaking, globally inclusive edition of the World Cup.”
ECA chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi called the plan “a pivotal step” in rewarding clubs for developing and releasing players for national duty.
FIFA will announce details on the payment process soon, but Ugandan teams are already eyeing a welcome new revenue stream for their investment in homegrown talent.
