2025 FIFA U17 World Cup

  • Uganda 1-1 Chile

Derrick Ssozi was the hero for Uganda Cubs, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer to secure a 1-1 draw against Chile in their second Group K match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

The young Cubs showed character and fight, coming from behind to earn their first point of the tournament in a lively encounter at the Aspire Zone Complex on Saturday.

Uganda started the game brightly, controlling possession and creating early chances but failing to convert.

Their missed opportunities proved costly when Chile took the lead just before halftime.

Bruno Torres capitalized on a goalkeeping mistake, heading home after a misjudged free kick in stoppage time of the first half.

The second half was end-to-end, with both sides threatening to score. Uganda pushed harder, showing urgency and improved link-up play as they chased an equalizer.

Their effort finally paid off deep into stoppage time when substitute Derrick Ssozi reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, calmly slotting it past the Chilean keeper to level the game and spark celebrations among the Cubs’ bench and supporters.

The result gives Uganda their first point of the campaign and keeps their hopes of progressing from Group K alive. They had earlier lost 2-1 to Canada in their opener.

In the group’s other match, France and Canada played out a goalless draw, leaving France top on four points, level with Canada but ahead on goal difference. Uganda sit third with one point, while Chile are bottom.

The Cubs now face a tough final group match against former champions France on November 11, a decisive fixture that will determine their World Cup fate in Qatar.
