Uganda’s U17 boys’ team, the Cubs, have written a golden chapter in their World Cup debut, storming into the Round of 32 with a thrilling 1–0 win over France on Tuesday at Aspire Zone Pitch 3 in Al Rayyan.

The hero was striker James Bogere, whose 18th-minute goal sealed Uganda’s qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.

The moment of magic came when Hamuza Ssengooba threaded a clever pass into the box, finding Bogere unmarked.

With calm precision, he slotted the ball past French goalkeeper Ilan Jourdren, sending the Ugandan bench into celebration.

From then on, it was all about resilience. Coach Brian Ssenyondo’s boys defended with heart, soaking up French pressure and holding firm until the final whistle.

The backline and goalkeeper were rock-solid, ensuring Bogere’s early strike stood as the match-winner.

Ssenyondo made just one change from the team that drew 1–1 with Chile, bringing in Arafat Nkoola for Innocent Asiimwe, a move that added extra energy in midfield.

When the group stage dust settled, Uganda, France, Canada, and Chile all finished on four points. Uganda advanced in third place on goal difference, earning a historic place in the knockout rounds.

Next up, the Cubs face Senegal, in what promises to be another defining chapter of Uganda’s remarkable run.
