Kampala Queens extended their lead at the top of the Finance Trust Women Super League table with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Uganda Martyrs at St. Gerald Stadium in Lubaga.
The match saw Peace Muduwa score the only goal of the game in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error when Uganda Martyrs goalkeeper Sharon Kaidu ventured too far from her goal.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, including a freekick from Sumaya Komuntale that hit the crossbar and efforts from Kamiyat and Catherine Nagadya that were off target, Kampala Queens couldn’t extend their lead.
However, Assistant Coach Kizza Sharon praised the team for their perseverance despite the challenging playing surface, which she said hindered their ability to play their usual game.
Muduwa, who was named Woman of the Match, expressed her gratitude towards her teammates, noting that the victory would motivate her to perform even better moving forward.
Uganda Martyrs, despite struggling to break down the Kampala Queens’ defense, were praised by their coach, Ssozi Edward, for their fighting spirit.
New signings Joan Namusisi, Moreen Afoyo, and Phiona Nabuddu made their debut, but the team remains in 9th position with 10 points, fighting to avoid relegation.
The win boosts Kampala Queens’ title hopes, increasing their lead to 28 points, three ahead of second-place Kawempe Muslim and four ahead of third-place Amus College.
Other results on the weekend saw She Corporate edge Lady Doves 1-0 thanks to striker Jesca Namanda while Olila managed to collect a point away in Luzira against She Maroons with goalless draw.
