Uganda will make history on Sunday, July 6, when it launches its first-ever Kabaddi Open League at Ridgeway School in Matugga.
The league introduces Kabaddi as an organized sport in Uganda, marking a major step toward growing its popularity and competitive presence.
Six teams will compete;
- Superior Kabaddi Club
- Nile Kabaddi Club
- Jakana Super Bullet Kabaddi Club
- Star Pirates Kabaddi Club
- Kampala Kabaddi Club
- War Jaguar Kabaddi Club.
About 150 players are expected to participate, bringing strength, speed, and strategy to a sport that blends wrestling and tag and traces its roots to South Asia.
Matches will be played every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., turning Ridgeway School into a weekly stage for high-energy action and local fanfare.
“This is a major step in bringing Kabaddi to Uganda’s sporting calendar,” said one of the organizers.
“We’re giving local talent a platform and introducing an exciting sport to new audiences.”
The League will be played for 6 months in a Round Robin style, the first round will be played for 3months, then take a 3-week break and resume the second round in December.
Kabaddi has been gaining momentum across Africa, and Uganda’s entry into the fold reflects a growing movement to diversify the continent’s sports scene.
