In a significant boost to Uganda’s national rugby ambitions, the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has announced the addition of former South African international Zane Kirchner to the Rugby Cranes technical team.
The former Springbok joins as the backs coach, reinforcing the team’s preparations for the upcoming 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, a crucial tournament that doubles as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Kirchner, a seasoned fullback who enjoyed a decorated career with the Bulls in Super Rugby and the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup, brings a wealth of experience to the Ugandan side.
He featured in 81 Super Rugby matches and 64 Currie Cup games, contributing significantly to the Bulls’ championship-winning campaigns in 2009 and 2010.
His appointment comes at the recommendation of national team consultant Nollis Marais, who has been working with the Rugby Cranes to elevate their technical and tactical standards.
“Bringing in someone with Zane’s experience adds tremendous value to our setup,” said Rugby Cranes Team Manager Andy Ikopit.
“He has competed at the highest level and brings insight that can help our players grow. His presence boosts our technical capacity as we build towards a critical year for Ugandan rugby.”
Kirchner will collaborate closely with head coach Fred Mudoola and assistants Leonard Lubambula, Timothy Mudoola and Marvin Odongo.
His main responsibility will be shaping and refining the backs unit as Uganda gears up to face regional rivals Kenya in their opening fixture of the Rugby Africa Cup.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Kirchner stated, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the Uganda Rugby Cranes. I’ve been following the growth of rugby in Uganda and I’m excited to contribute to that journey. The talent is real, and I’m looking forward to working with the players and coaching team to help unlock the next level.”
