The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) concluded its 3rd FUBA Beginners Coaching Course this week at the YMCA, a milestone event that is generating important conversations about the future of basketball development across Uganda.

Led by Albert Aciko, FUBA’s Head of Coaching Education, the course brought together aspiring coaches eager to deepen their understanding of the game.

According to Aciko, the program is helping to spark a nationwide hunger for basketball knowledge.

“These have opened up different discussions in the three regions I’ve been to so far. People are hungry for the knowledge,” he noted.

However, he acknowledged a lingering challenge: “Unfortunately, not many have learned to appreciate that they actually need this course.”

Aciko also reflected on his own professional growth through the program. “The more I teach, the more I get better and know how to deliver the course to the different places and people,” he said.

The initiative received strong backing from the Commissioner of Youth and Mini Basketball in Uganda, who commended the regions that have embraced the program and reaffirmed FUBA’s dedication to grassroots basketball development.

Participants praised the course’s depth and practical relevance, with one attendee lamenting that more high school and academy coaches had not taken part.

“How you train a 16-year-old is not the same for a 12 or 10-year-old. This course has exposed me, but above all, the details in everything,” the participant shared.

They urged fellow coaches and players to value continuous learning: “We all need this knowledge, and just like you buy books to read, ensure to invest in yourselves. Knowledge doesn’t come easy.”
